On Friday 23 February, H.E. Ms. Michelle Bachelet Jeria, President of the Republic of Chile, who was in Japan at the invitation of the Japanese Government, visited the House with her delegation and met with Mr. Tadamori Oshima, Speaker.
Speaker Oshima began by welcoming the delegation to Japan, expressing his appreciation for the President's contributions toward the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) to be signed in Chile in March this year. He noted that last year celebrated the 120th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between their countries, which witnessed a number of exchanges, including visits to Chile by Their Imperial Highnesses Prince and Princess Akishino and by many of the Diet Members. The Speaker said that he hoped for further exchanges in the future. He also gave his thanks for the support Japan received from Chile after the Great East Japan Earthquake and the resulting tsunami in 2011.
In reply, thanking Speaker Oshima for his welcome, President Bachelet stated that she hoped to take advantage of her visit to Japan to further deepen the friendship between their countries. She then expressed appreciation for technical support in disaster prevention and reduction provided by Japan, a country which, just like Chile, is prone to natural disasters.
They also talked about other subjects including the excellent performances of Chilean and Japanese athletes in the Olympic Games.
