On Tuesday 13 March, Mr. Marzouq Ali Al-Ghanim, Speaker of the National Assembly of the State of Kuwait, who was in Japan at the invitation of the House of Representatives of Japan, visited the House with his delegation and met with Mr. Tadamori Oshima, Speaker; Mr. Hirotaka Akamatsu, Vice-Speaker; Mr. Keiji Furuya, Chairman of the Standing Committee on Rules and Administration; Mr. Nobuo Kishi, Mr. Yoshio Maki and Mr. Wataru Ito, Directors of the Committee; and Mr. Kazuma Nakatani and Mr. Tetsuya Shiokawa, Members of the Committee.
Speaker Oshima began by welcoming the delegation to Japan. He praised the Kuwaiti Speaker for playing an important role globally, and thanked Kuwait for the generous support Japan received after the Great East Japan Earthquake and the resulting tsunami on 11 March 2011. In addition, he expressed his hope that Japanese technology would be used for the development of infrastructure in Kuwait, and stressed the importance of active exchange between their parliamentarians.
In reply, Speaker Ghanim thanked Mr. Oshima for the invitation to his delegation which led to the first visit to Japan by a Kuwaiti Speaker in 45 years. He added that his country respected Japan and truly appreciated Japan's support after the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, and welcomed Japan's participation in various projects in Kuwait. He also expressed Kuwait's intention to support Japan's position in the international community.
They also talked about other subjects including the bilateral agreement on technological cooperation and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
