On Thursday 10 May, Mr. Li Keqiang, Premier of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, who was on an Official Visit to Japan, visited the House with his delegation and met with Mr. Tadamori Oshima, Speaker; Mr. Hirotaka Akamatsu, Vice-Speaker; Mr. Keiji Furuya, Chairman of the Standing Committee on Rules and Administration; Mr. Masatoshi Ishida, Mr. Yoshio Tezuka, Mr. Yoshio Maki, and Mr. Wataru Ito, Directors of the Committee; Mr. Hajime Hirota and Mr. Tetsuya Shiokawa, Members of the Committee; and Ms. Natsue Mori, Member of the House.
Speaker Oshima began by welcoming the delegation to Japan. Praising the Japan-China summit meeting held on the previous day, he stated that it brought a sense of relief and stability to Asia and the international community, while stressing the importance of bilateral cooperation in handling matters related to North Korea. He then expressed his appreciation to Mr. Li Zhanshu, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, for inviting him to China. He stated that it was important to deepen bilateral relations not only at the government level, but also through exchange in various fields including between Japanese and Chinese parliamentarians and among citizens of the two countries. He also indicated his hope that this year, marking the 40th anniversary of the conclusion of the Treaty of Peace and Friendship between Japan and China, would serve as an opportunity for great progress in the bilateral relationship.
In reply, Premier Li expressed appreciation to Speaker Oshima for his welcome. He praised the efforts by Japanese parliamentarians to bring the bilateral relationship back on track and develop it further, noting the importance of the two parliaments strengthening the foundation of public opinion. He also welcomed Speaker Oshima visiting China in the future, expressing hope that parliamentary exchange and parliamentarians' even greater efforts would take the current opportunity to contribute to improvement and further advancement of bilateral ties.
