On Wednesday, 31 October, the Hon. Wesley W. Simina, Speaker of the Congress of the Federated States of Micronesia, visited the House with his delegation and met with Mr. Tadamori Oshima, Speaker.
Speaker Oshima began by welcoming the delegation to Japan, indicating his pleasure at seeing Speaker Simina again after around two and a half years, and expressed his appreciation for the considerate message received from the Micronesian Speaker regarding the damage caused by the torrential rains across western Japan in July this year. Speaker Oshima also told Speaker Simina that he hoped to vigorously promote exchanges between their parliaments to further develop friendly relations with Micronesia, where about one in five Micronesians is Japanese-Micronesian.
In reply, Speaker Simina expressed his gratitude for Speaker Oshima's welcome and his pleasure at meeting again, and once again extended his sympathy to all people affected by the natural disasters that occurred in Japan this year. Also, mentioning that this year marked the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, Speaker Simina emphasized how important their exchanges were from economic and cultural perspectives, as well as the importance of furthering their parliamentary exchanges.
They also commented on other subjects including measures to deal with climate change and the development of a closer cooperative relationship in the fishery field.
