Marshal of the Polish Senate visits Speaker Oshima

On Wednesday, 19 February, Prof. Tomasz Grodzki, Marshal of the Senate of the Republic of Poland, who was in Japan at the invitation of the House of Councillors, visited the House of Representatives with his delegation and met with Mr. OSHIMA Tadamori, Speaker; Mr. AKAMATSU Hirotaka, Vice-Speaker; and Mr. TAKAGI Tsuyoshi, Chairman of the Standing Committee on Rules and Administration.

Speaker Oshima, beginning by welcoming the delegation to Japan, stated that he hoped this visit would contribute to further developing the bilateral relationship, with the centenary of the establishment of Japan-Poland diplomatic relations having been celebrated in 2019. He referred to the importance of cooperation between Japan and the Visegrad Four, and expressed his hope for the leadership of Poland which will take over the presidency of the Visegrad Group in July 2020. (The Visegrad Group, Visegrad Four, or V4, is a regional cooperation framework consisting of the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia.)

In reply, Senate Marshal Grodzki, expressing his gratitude for Mr. Oshima's welcome, stated that the long-standing friendship between their countries serves as a foundation for bilateral exchange.

During the meeting, they also touched on the issuance of visas by the Polish government to Japanese workers and the story of when Japan rescued Polish orphans from Siberia, the 100th anniversary of which will be marked in 2020.
