Today, following its missile launch on 29 August 2017, North Korea once again willfully went ahead and launched a ballistic missile that flew over Japan. Reiterating our strong anger and protest, I resolutely condemn North Korea's dangerous action which was deliberately taken, following its sixth nuclear test on 3 September 2017, completely disregarding repeated requests from Japan and other members of the international community to restrain itself.
North Korea's further acceleration in its nuclear weapons and missile development program poses an unprecedented level of direct and real threat to the peace and stability of Japan, the Asia-Pacific region, and the entire international community. It is also a clear and serious challenge to the longstanding efforts of the international community to create a nuclear nonproliferation regime.
The Government of Japan should exert the utmost efforts by firmly demanding again that North Korea should immediately stop its provocative actions and swiftly abandon all its nuclear weapons, obeying a series of United Nations Security Council Resolutions, including that of 2375 which was adopted on 12 September 2017, while at the same time, in close cooperation with the international community, calling on the UN member states to fully implement sanctions against North Korea based on the UN Security Council resolutions.
I also call on the Government of Japan to closely work with local governments and other parties concerned to be prepared for any contingency and take all possible measures to ensure the safety of the Japanese people by continuously and appropriately providing the public with information.
