  • Career:
  • Joined the Ministry of International Trade and Industry in 1976
  • First elected to the House of Representatives (1990)
  • Left the Liberal Democratic Party in 1993, maintaining his belief in realizing politics in which it is possible to change the government
  • Took part in forming the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) in 1998 and became its President
  • As Secretary General of the DPJ, achieved change of the government through general election in August 2009
  • Minister for Foreign Affairs in the new administration
  • Secretary General of the DPJ, when it was one of the ruling parties
  • Deputy Prime Minister
  • Re-elected as President of the DPJ in January 2015
  • United opposition parties to form the Democratic Party (DP) in March 2016
