The 18th G7 Speakers' Meeting

From Saturday 12 to Sunday 13 September, the 18th G7 Speakers' Meeting was held online for the first time, hosted by the Hon. Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House of Representatives of the United States of America. Mr. OSHIMA Tadamori, Speaker of the House of Representatives, took part in the virtual conference from Japan.

The meeting began with Speaker Pelosi's welcome and opening remarks, followed by greetings from Mr. Oshima and the other participating presiding officers.

Next, three panel discussions took place relating to the theme of this year's meeting: "Addressing the Climate Crisis with Economic and Environmental Justice for All." The participants asked questions to the panelists concerning the discussions.

After the panels, there were two working sessions dealing with climate cooperation and COVID-19 recovery, where Mr. Oshima and his colleagues explained initiatives in their countries. They then had an open exchange of views on the role played by parliaments.

The conference concluded with closing remarks from each participant, and Rt. Hon. Sir Lindsay Hoyle, Speaker of the House of Commons of the United Kingdom, remarked that he looked forward to hosting the next year's meeting in the U.K.
