The 20th G7 Speakers' Meeting

Mr. HOSODA Hiroyuki, Speaker of the House of Representatives, attended the 20th G7 Speakers' Meeting, which was held in Berlin, Germany on 16 September (local time).

Mme. Bärbel Bas, President of the Bundestag of the Federal Republic of Germany, began by welcoming the participants and delivering her opening remarks. She expressed her sincere gratitude to Dr. Ruslan Stefanchuk, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, for joining the meeting as a guest, as well as for his attendance to the extraordinary virtual meeting in March 2022.

The theme of the first session was "Russia's aggression against Ukraine-consequences for a new international security architecture," at which Dr. Stefanchuk and Hon. Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House of Representatives of the United States of America, delivered keynote addresses. The presiding officers of the G7 countries exchanged views, and Speaker Hosoda once again strongly condemned Russia's aggression against Ukraine. He stressed that security in Europe and the Indo-Pacific are inseparable and that changing the status quo through force is absolutely unacceptable. Mr. Hosoda also explained Japan's support for Ukraine, and expressed solidarity with Ukraine and its people.

In the second session, "Strengthening democracy through education," keynote addresses were delivered by Mme. Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, and Prof. Robert Vehrkamp, an expert on the theme. The presiding officers of the G7 countries exchanged views, and Mr. Hosoda highlighted the necessity of further promoting the participation of younger generations in politics. He stated that it is essential to increase interest in politics by making sure everyone holds shared democratic values. Speaker Hosoda also noted that he would work to increase the number of women political leaders, especially the number of women members of the Diet.
