Icelandic President visits Speaker Oshima

On Thursday, 24 October, H.E. Dr. Guðni Thorlacius Jóhannesson, President of the Republic of Iceland, visited the House of Representatives and met with Mr. Tadamori Oshima, Speaker.

Speaker Oshima began by expressing his profound appreciation to President Jóhannesson for visiting Japan to attend the Ceremony of the Enthronement of His Majesty the Emperor. He then expressed his intention to support more frequent parliamentary exchange, including activities by the parliamentarians' friendship leagues as well as interaction between the two governments.

In response, President Jóhannesson stated that it was a great honor to be present at the enthronement ceremony, expressing gratitude for the invitation on behalf of the people of Iceland. He also commented that he hoped this visit would provide both countries, which share common values, with an opportunity to work together to address global issues and to progress together toward an advanced society.

Other subjects in their meeting included the sustainable use of the Arctic and fishery resources, green energy and the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games.
