Singaporean Speaker visits Speaker Oshima


On Monday, 2 August, Mr. Tan Chuan-Jin, Speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Singapore, visited the House of Representatives with his delegation and met with Mr. OSHIMA Tadamori, Speaker, and Mr. AKAMATSU Hirotaka, Vice-Speaker.

Mr. Oshima began by welcoming Mr. Tan, who was visiting for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Mr. Tan also serves as the President of the Singapore National Olympic Council. He also stated that he was grateful that Japan was able to host the Tokyo Olympic Games with the participation of athletes from Singapore and more than 200 other countries and regions despite the difficult situation. He then remarked that this year is the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Singapore. He stated that in order to further strengthen bilateral relations, having exchange between the parliaments and parliamentarians of the two countries, as illustrated by this visit by Mr. Tan, is truly meaningful.

Mr. Tan replied by expressing his appreciation for Mr. Oshima's welcome and also for Japan's efforts in hosting the Olympic Games. He conveyed his wish that the Tokyo Olympics will inspire people around the world who have been suffering from the COVID-19 pandemic.

They also touched on Singapore lifting the restrictions on food imported from Japan this May, which were imposed since the 2011 earthquake. They also exchanged views on how to further enhance economic relations between the two countries and exchange between people.
